Summer 2025
AUDREY COLE'S VISIT TO NOVA SCOTIA -- BOOK SIGNING
This summer, I had the good fortune to travel to Wolfville, Nova Scotia, to visit with trailblazer and parent advocate Audrey Cole who has long been a cherished visitor to Nova Scotia. Audrey and her late husband, Fred Cole, spent many summers with their beloved now sadly departed son, Ian Cole in the province. Even after 30 years, Audrey continues to make the beautiful journey to visit dear friends, Patricia and the renowned human rights advocate and author of “Dispatches,” Catherine Frazee. A part of the Cole family's powerful story is captured in the pages of The Audacity of Inclusion. Their legacy speaks to the enduring power of love, advocacy, and resilience. History has a way of repeating itself especially when it comes to institutional barriers and the ongoing exclusion from schools and communities. That is why recognizing the tireless contributions of parents like Audrey, who have worked for decades as advocates to promote community living, a world free of institutions, in order to create a more inclusive world, remain not only relevant but essential.

INSTITUTION WATCH NEWSLETTER
I am excited to report that The Audacity of Inclusion made the People First summer Reading List in its June 2025 Institution Watch Newsletter. It is an honour to be included in the recommended reading list alongside the announcement of the launch of the documentary These Four Walls. This stunning and important film sheds light on life in the Manitoba Development Centre (MDC) and highlights activist David Weremy's journey to bring a class action against MDC, ultimately resulting in its permanent closure.

"PRESS RELEASE: NEW BOOK REVEALS THE TAPROOT OF DISABILITY INJUSTICE - THE LAW"
HALIFAX, NS – Dulcie McCallum’s new book, The Audacity of Inclusion: Fighting for the Equality of Persons Labelled Intellectually Disabled was released this week.
Dulcie, a renowned human rights lawyer, long-time advocate for persons with an intellectual disability, author of the Need to Know report on systemic abuse at Woodlands, and a key member of Inclusion Canada’s Strategic Litigation Committee, has released a new reader-friendly book that sheds light on the pervasive legal challenges and barriers faced by individuals and families in their pursuit for equality.

"The Audacity of Inclusion is a powerful reminder that at the core of the disability rights movement are families and individuals labelled intellectually disabled who want what all families want: for their family member to be supported, included, and respected. Dulcie's book of true stories captures the resilience and determination of families and self-advocates and provides a much-needed exploration of how the law, rather than continuing to be the cause of injustice, needs to focus on how to achieve meaningful equality and full inclusion for every person with an intellectual disability,” said Krista Carr, Executive Vice-President of Inclusion Canada, reflecting on the significance of the book.
